Shooting

 

 

On Wednesday night (2-28-01) at approximately 10:21p.m. a call came into the 911 Center advising a man had been shot at 500 Moore Drive. Upon arrival officers found the deceased body of Elbert Eugene Smith Jr. lying in one of the rooms of the residence. The victim had gunshot wound(s) to the head. A firearm was found on the floor beside the body. The location where the incident occurred is a new unoccupied house under construction. At the time the victim was shot there were two other individuals in the house. All three had been working on the house for several hours.

            Investigators determined over 12-ounces of Methamphetamine had been taken out of the residence after the victim had been shot. Officers found the Methamphetamine hidden in a wooded area beside the residence. Investigators determined the narcotics had been in the room where the victim was shot.

            James Scott Brewer was arrested on narcotic charges after it was determined he removed the Methamphetamine from the residence. Brewer was in the room with the victim at the time the victim was shot. The house under construction where the incident occurred belongs to Brewer and his girlfriend. She was not present at the time of the incident. The third man at the residence when the victim was shot was in another part of the residence when the incident occurred.

            An autopsy performed at the G.B.I. Crime Lab on Thursday (3-1-01) revealed the victim had received two gunshot wound to the head area. On Friday (3-2-01) Investigators charged James Scott Brewer with Murder. Brewer is being held at the Correctional Center without bond. The G.B.I. and the Coroners Office are assisting the Sheriff’s Department in the investigation. Investigation to continue.
