Methamphetamine Arrest

    The Narcotics Division of the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation have been conducting an investigation on an individual living on Peggy Lane in Tunnel Hill. The suspect is believed to be a major Methamphetamine dealer in this area. On 7-31-01 investigators were conducting surveillance on the residence when they observed the suspect (Michael Bates) leave in a vehicle around 8:00pm. Investigators begin a moving surveillance on the vehicle. Bates is believed to have “spotted” the investigators while traveling on Reed Pond Road and was observed throwing a suspicious package out the car window. Investigators stopped the car and recovered the package he had thrown out. The package was found to contain approximately one ounce of methamphetamine. Bates was taken into custody.

    Investigators then returned to the Bates residence and executed a search warrant. During the search a safe was located inside the residence. Upon opening the safe investigators discovered approximately $40,000 dollars worth of Methamphetamine and over $19,000 in cash. In addition to the currency and illegal narcotics, investigators also seized two vehicles, two four-wheelers, a motorcycle, 13-weapons, a police scanner, night vision equipment, and other items.

    Michael Henry Bates, DOB 6-3-69, of 1313 Peggy Lane has been charged with two counts of Trafficking in Methamphetamine. He is currently being detained at the Correctional Center without bond. Investigation to continue.
